THE DOC SALON is a film society founded in Pittsburgh in 2006. We meet monthly to view and discuss films by members, or contemporary films at local venues, with the aim of appreciating documentaries in all their wondrous complexity!
Subscription is free, and includes discounted and no-cost screenings and events throughout the year.
APRIL 2026 at the SALON

TWO EVENTS IN APRIL
First, an online lunchtime talk about the mess that documentaries get themselves into. Then the world premiere of Tony Buba and Marcus Rediker's latest film.
THE SELF-MADE PROBLEMS OF DOCUMENTARY FILM
a talk by Will Zavala
A few decades ago, documentaries broke into the stronghold that fiction held on TV, movies, and the streaming world.
Documentary, however, is a deeply defective deliverer of the truth. Its popularity has exposed some of these problems, while others remain hidden from audiences who put their trust in it. Filmmaker/educator Zavala will reveal these fascinating flaws, illustrating the session with samples from popular films and his own work. With AI eroding the integrity of the videographic image, nonfiction media was already on unstable footing; this talk pulls the rug out further still.
This talk is part of Carlow University's Cultural Theory - Historical Practices Series. It is open to the public.
Thursday, April 9, 12:30 - 1:45p

BECOMING BENJAMIN LAY
Tony Buba and Marcus Rediker present the world premiere of their film about a remarkable character in American colonial history that few have ever heard of. Becoming Benjamin Lay looks at the staging of a play about Lay, whose dwarfism is ingrained in the play's message.
Saturday, April 11, 4:00 – 5:00p
Followed by Q&A with the filmmakers
